Hall Conservation was asked to conduct some cleaning trials on 14 leaves from Screen four of the Tijou screens from Hampton Court Palace.
Several tests were carefully undertaken to establish the best method for removing the epoxy paint while leaving the cadmium plating intact. Altogether six chemical cleaning methods and two mechanical cleaning methods were tested in our workshop. In the case of the chemical treatments, they were applied and left overnight to be accessed the next day. Two of the chemical tests proved equally effective at cleaning the leaves.
We have a long working relationship with Hampton Court Palace, especially with the Tijou Screens. It was a pleasure to work on these leaves created so skillfully by master blacksmith, Jean Tijou.
